B-24H serial 41-28228, assigned to the 409th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group, departed Station 104 on 5 February 1944 on a bombing mission to Chateaudun, France.

The aircraft was last seen at 1143 between Tours and Chateaudun. Eyewitnesses reported the aircraft left the formation apparently under control, then approximately two minutes later was seen to blow up. Weather at the time was clear with unlimited visibility.

German field-air-district records confirm a Liberator crashed at approximately 12:30 on 5 February 1944, 1 km north of Danze, 14 km west of Freteval, 24 km south-southwest of Chateaudun. Most of the crew of 10 survived and were captured by German forces.
